Like any other casino game, the house will definitely have an edge when playing blackjack. Have you seen a casino that loses more than it wins? In playing blackjack, however, the edge of the house is relatively small more so if the player knows how to play the game. One way of turning the edge in your (the player) favor is by learning how to count the cards properly.
The card counting system applicable for blackjack was developed in 1957 by Ed Thorp. The system makes of probabilities, making the best guess whether the cards in the shoe favor the dealer or one of the baccarat players in the table. This card counting system had been the basis of other card counting systems later developed. Card counting may sound a bit complicated but once you get the hang of it, profitability will follow.

The card counting system is very simple. This is actually a process of assigning cards with values. Cards of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are given 1 positive value point. Cards of 7, 8 and 9 are zero value. The remaining cards will be given one negative value. These are the scores, kings, queens, cranes and voices. After shuffling the cards and putting them on the shoe, the count should start with zero. Cards will be dealt and all cards must be added or subtracted based on their given value and not on their face value. If the first card dealt is a king, it must be counted minus one. When that number is followed by ten, the number must be subtracted again. If the next card is between 2 and 6, the number must be added by one. If the final count is positive after all cards are dealt, the player must place a higher bet than when the final count is negative.

One may wonder if card counting is legal when playing blackjack. You should know that even big casinos acknowledge the legality of the act of counting card. However, the casinos hold the right of refusing any individual from gambling for any ground. The casinos may even ask anyone to leave the premises more so if the person is suspected of card counting. Some casinos ban those gamblers who resort to card counting.

The premise behind the system of card counting is simple. Based on statistics as well as on blackjack rules, if there are many cards with high value that remains on the shoe and are yet to be dealt, the players on the table would have the upper hand. There are just five kinds of cards that you should watch namely, aces, tens, kings, queens and jacks. Reversely, if there are many cards of lower value than the aforementioned, the house would definitely have an advantage.

However, card counting is very challenging. It requires a lot of effort on the part of the player. Anyhow, this can be practiced at home. You may start with a deck of card. After shuffling it, you have to flip the cards one by one, performing the count mentally as possible. Practice makes perfect hence the faster you flip and count the card, the more accurate your final count will become.
