Any casino game requires a certain degree of strategizing. In playing pontoon, you have to understand the game thoroughly before you may even strategize. Of course, the player has to be aware of specific basic principles which will guide the player in playing the game. Some of these principles include minimizing the risk of busting, maximizing the chances of getting a five-card trick, maximizing payouts through buying wisely and splitting judiciously. How these general principles are translated into winning tips is discussed below.

In minimizing the risk of busting, you have to stick with cards that total to 15. In playing pontoon, there are cards that can help you, then there are cards that won't. The cards that could help you are: 3, 4, 5 and 6 and the cards that won't are: 7, 8, 9, 10 and king, queen and jack. There are also cards that can either help or bust you: 2 and ace. There is a high probability that you will get an unhelpful than a helpful card, so it is best to stick with the hand than buy a new card.

In maximizing the chance of getting a 5-card trick, you have to take risk. A five-card trick can beat that of the dealer's despite the total point. Apart from this, five-card trick is paid with a 2:1 ratio on your bet. If you have four cards with a value of 15, you may take another card without busting. You have to be careful though since there are only 6 cards that can give provide you a five-card trick and 7 cards which can bust you. While the odd is slightly against you, this is worth taking the risk. You can win when you buy a card when your four-card already totals to 16 and twist when the card already totals to 17. Anything higher than 17 can get you busted.

In buying wisely, you may double your payout since you are actually doubling the bet when buying. Losing is always a possibility so any player should strive at winning the biggest possible payout. If you think you have a rather strong hand, you should double your bet. You should not do so if your hand is not that strong since this could also mean double your losses in case that your hand doesn't win. You may buy if you have a four-card hand that totals to 9, 10 or 11 more so since there are many cards with 10 points. When you land to any of these cards, your card will be 19, 20 or 21, all of which are considered to be winning hands.

In splitting judiciously, you need not split the hand if the face value is an ace or an 8. Splitting a hand of 8s can be simple but splitting the hand of aces is quite controversial and tricky at that. When you split aces, the possibility of getting pontoon on both hands is high. However, some experts say that you should not strive at getting a 10-point card since an ace is a good starting point in getting a 5-card trick. Anyhow, the decision will rest on the hand of the player and his risk tolerance level.
