Baccarat is one of the oldest casino games that are still played at casinos today. The history of baccarat, which literally means zero, dates back to the 1490 A.D. Baccarat has a very interesting history, one that is based on a mythology and one that is about an Italian gambler.

In mythology, there was once a blonde virgin who was about to perform an Etruscan ritual along with nine gods. This girl anxiously waited for the revelation of her fate while the nine gods waited tiptoeing as well. The gods did this while the virgin was rolling a die with nine sides. When the die landed, the fate of the virgin was set which basically depended on the number of the die by which it landed on. The virgin had at least three fates. First, if the die will land on either 8 or 9, the virgin will become a priestess. If the die will land on either 6 or 7, the virgin will become an outcast wherein she can no longer perform any religious activity from that day forward. If the die will land on any number from 1 to 5, the fate of the virgin will not be that good. This meant that the virgin has to walk into the deep and perish.

Further, there was a huge argument whether baccarat originated from France or Italy. Nonetheless, it was believed to be created by Felix Falguererein, an Italian gambler, in 1490 A.D. Falguererein made use of Tarot cards in inventing the baccarat. Tarot cards were used practically in predicting the fate of any person. The Tarot cards have four suits, which formed the basis of the suites that were used until today.

Baccarat was originally played by noblemen and it was in fact played secretly because baccarat was considered illegal. On the other, it was France that originally legalized the game after realizing the amount of money involved in playing the game. The French government was the first to incur taxes for baccarat winnings. The government used the tax collected from baccarat in improving poorly developed parts of the country. When Napoleon ruled France, he made the game illegal. After his reign, baccarat was legalized again and was now able to be played in different casinos in the country.

It is clear that baccarat was very popular in Europe so it is no wonder that it started spreading in different parts of the world like America. Gambling was first played in South America in the western Atlantic Ocean. It was until the late 1950s when Americans created their own version of baccarat. Tommy Renzoni presented an American version that combines elements of European baccarat and the French game of Chermin de Ver. The game was chosen by Dunes Casino, which was located in Las Vegas. Due to the complexity of the original version of the game, a mini baccarat game was invented. This version is what people have played in most casinos in the United States today.

Today, baccarat is not only popular in live casinos worldwide, but also in online casinos. Thousands of casino enthusiasts play baccarat online on a daily basis.
