If there is one casino game
with a history that is
widely debated worldwide
that will be blackjack. Some
people say that blackjack
was played long before Jesus
was born. Some people also
say that blackjack was
invented 600 years ago after
the invention of the playing
card. While this is the
case, blackjack continues to
evolve over the years and
often than not, the new
versions are always better
than its predecessor in
terms of odds.
In Europe, it was believed
that blackjack was created
during 700 B.C. at the time
when the Roman occupied the
continent. Blackjack was
played differently because
it was not until 1440 that
the use of cards was
introduced. Some Romans
strongly argue that
blackjack was played using
wooden block with each block
having a numerical value. If
this can be proven true,
this means that blackjack
was played at its simplest
form before the cards were
invented. This is more so
because gambling was already
ripe during the Roman Empire
wherein Romans gamble
anything not just their
jewelries and other
treasures like animals but
also their wives.
After many centuries,
blackjack was played in the
way that we know now. The
modern history of blackjack
could be traced since the
15th century in two
countries: Italy or France.
John Guttenberg invented the
playing cards in 1440 in the
time when the games involved
the process of counting
totals like how blackjack is
played today.
There were games that are
fundamentally the same with
playing blackjack. One such
game is the baccarat which
was invented in Italy in
1493. Yet another game was
called “1 & 30” which is
of Spanish origin. However,
neither of these games can
be considered as the
original blackjack game
because of some important
variations.
Stronger evidence on the
origin of blackjack can be
traced in 18th century
France. The French
aristocrats used to play
“21″, a game that is
basically played in rounds
where the players are
attempting to get a total
card value of 21. However,
when the dealer was able to
achieve the score of 21
first, other players would
have to pay the dealer on a
3-1 ratio. Evidently, this
is known today as the house
edge.
This game spread in the US
in the year 1875. It was not
until 1910 that 21″ was
played in gambling halls.
The game was not able to
draw a sizable amount of
players despite the fact
that gaming halls had
created new systems of
payouts which include
bonuses for specific hands.
The game became blackjack
when these gaming halls
offered bonuses for those
players who were able to
land the hand consisting of
ace of spades and jack of
spades or clubs. While the
bonus didn't thrive, the
name blackjack was retained.
Blackjack became so popular
in the 1930s. In fact, it
was considered as the number
one casino game in Las Vegas
during those times.
Blackjack continues to be
popular especially among the
high rollers who are willing
to spend millions of dollars
in playing the game in major
casinos in the US.
