Like other casino games, the
history of pontoon is not
quite clear though there are
acceptable theories behind
the game. Pontoon is
considered the first and the
original version of
blackjack. Depending on the
place of origin of an
individual, s/he may
perceive pontoon differently
from other people hence
pontoon should be played by
gamers with the same
orientation of the rules of
a specific pontoon version.
Pontoon is considered as the
British blackjack though
blackjack is considered as
the American version of
vingt-et-un, a French word
which literally means twenty
one. Twenty one was
originally played in the
court of Louis XV. Napoleon
Bonaparte also favored the
game particularly in St.
Helena. The game was
considered the most famous
game in the armed forces of
mostly English-speaking
countries during the 20th
century. However, the game
has no official rules hence
it varied considerably from
one place to another.
Today, pontoon is most
commonly played in the
Commonwealth and the United
Kingdom using a standard
deck of playing cards.
Although pontoon is
essentially the same as the
British version of
blackjack, the games should
not be confused. However,
the British float uses
different terms such as
“twist” which also means
“hit” as well as “buy” which
means to double the bet.
British pontoon also has
some special rules.
Moreover, there are people
who call pontoon blackjack
pontoon. The difference in
floating blackjack with
other variations is that
some of the other versions
remove cards with a face
value of 10 even though the
player still needs a hand
totaling 21.
Pontoon, though considered
an unlicensed version of
Spanish 21 which is an
American game, is more
popular in Australia than in
the United States.
Nonetheless, pontoon is
commonly played in casinos
in Malaysia and Singapore.
In Brisbane, specifically
ion Treasury Casino, pontoon
is called Treasury 21. In
Gold Coast, particularly in
Jupiter Casino, it is called
Jupiter 21. In Cairns, it is
called Paradise Pontoon and
in Tasmania, it is called
the Federal Pontoon.
An arithmetical game,
pontoon is played in the
table which layout is the
same as that of blackjack.
The player's goal is to
acquire cards which total is
more than that of the dealer
but is not more than 21. The
dealer will get busted and
thus lose if he has more
than 21 in total.
Nevertheless, pontoon
actually refers to an ace
and a 10-point card that
when any player has it, s/he
can definitely beat the
dealer's pontoon. Today, the
pontoon game that we are
seeing is similar with
Spanish 21 where cards come
from a shoe or the
continuous shuffling
machine. Like blackjack, the
face value of cards with
numbers 2 to 9 is the same
but aces are counted either
1 or 11, depending on the
requirement of the hand.
Courts are counted as 10
each.
Since the rules are very
different, the players must
come up with varying
strategies in winning the
game. It is inevitable for
any player to learn about
the basics of pontoon before
even playing pontoon.
